Myopia Awareness Week, observed from May 23-28, 2025, underscores the significant and increasing risks associated with progressive myopia throughout an individual’s lifetime. The South African Optometric Association (SAOA), celebrating 100 years, emphasizes the importance of early intervention, advocating for “myopia control” in “at-risk” children as soon as possible.

We wish to remind patients that this eye condition is progressive and does impact your overall well-being over time, so it’s important to have it monitored through regular eye examinations. Beyond clinical treatments, parental guidance on lifestyle interventions, such as decreased screen time and increased outdoor play, are crucial for enhancing the chances of successful management and mitigating long-term complications.

The infographic vividly illustrates how the risks of severe eye conditions escalate with increasing levels of myopia. For instance, individuals with over -6.00 D of myopia face an alarming 5 times higher risk of cataracts, a 14 times higher risk of glaucoma, a 22 times higher risk of retinal detachment, and a staggering 41 times higher risk of myopic macular degeneration compared to those without the condition.

These statistics highlight the critical need for proactive myopia management to preserve vision and overall well-being, emphasizing that early detection and consistent monitoring are key to reducing the burden of these potentially sight-threatening complications.
