Pregnancy is a transformative journey, bringing incredible changes to a woman’s body—including her eyes. While many focus on common symptoms like morning sickness and cravings, few realize that vision can also be affected during pregnancy. These changes are usually temporary, but knowing what to expect can help you navigate them with ease.
1. Changes in Corneal Curvature
Hormonal fluctuations can alter the shape of your cornea, leading to slight vision changes. If your glasses or contact lenses don’t feel quite right, this could be the reason. Most of the time, vision returns to normal after delivery.
2. Contact Lens Discomfort
Increased dryness in the eyes can make wearing contact lenses uncomfortable. If you experience irritation, consider switching to glasses for a while or using lubricating eye drops recommended by your optometrist.
3. Hyperpigmented Eyelids
Hormonal changes can cause darkening around the eyes, known as hyperpigmentation. This is usually temporary and may fade after pregnancy, similar to the “pregnancy mask” that some women develop on their skin.
4. Spider Veins Around the Eyes
Elevated estrogen levels can cause tiny blood vessels to become more visible, leading to red or spider-like veins around the eyes. While harmless, this can be an unexpected change during pregnancy.
5. Ptosis (Drooping Eyelid)
Though uncommon, some women experience ptosis, or drooping of the upper eyelid. This condition is usually mild and resolves on its own post-pregnancy.
6. Dry Eyes
Nearly 60-70% of pregnant women experience dry eyes due to hormonal shifts affecting tear production. Using a humidifier or artificial tears can help relieve discomfort.
7. Increased Light Sensitivity and Migraines
Pregnancy-related hormone changes can make your eyes more sensitive to light, often triggering migraines. Wearing sunglasses and reducing screen time can help manage this sensitivity.
While most pregnancy-related eye changes are temporary, it’s always a good idea to consult an optometrist if you notice significant vision issues. At Opti Eyewear in Diepkloof, Soweto, Johannesburg, we’re here to help you see clearly through every stage of life—including pregnancy!
