This week marks World Glaucoma Week.

Glaucoma is one of the most common eye disorders and it is a leading cause of blindness in South Africa.

It is a disease that progresses silently and slowly, leading to irreversible loss of vision and can eventually result in blindness. The good news is that if it is diagnosed and treated early, blindness is preventable.

Glaucoma can be painless and unnoticeable to the patient while it progressively causes permanent damage.  By the time the patient feels pain, the risk of blindness is extremely high. Therefore, it is important to go for regular eye tests for early detection of Glaucoma in order to prevent permanent loss of eyesight.
